Designing A Pattern

Sarah taught me how to make a sewing pattern by deconstructing a favorite article of clothing and using wrapping paper for the paper. After I made the pattern, I made a "test" shirt out of a deep purple material. It came out really well. It's simple but very flattering.
I used the pattern again to make a dress suitable for the temple...actually a shirt and a skirt. I found a beautiful wrinkle free white material that I really liked. I took my favorite skirt and made a pattern for that without deconstructing it. :) Then I embroidered a pretty flower design on one of the shoulders. I happened to have it with me when I was looking for new white shoes the other day where there were other white dresses. The two salesclerks were very excited when they saw what I made. They complimented me over and over again. They said if I sold them they would "sell like hot cakes." Alas, I am not going to be in the sewing business but I was very happy and grateful for the sincere compliments. One actually asked me if I would make her one but I declined.

I like my new white outfit and I like my new shirt and I am happy about a newly acquired skill.

Today I had a gum graft. Ouch. Due to a receding gum on one of my teeth; a periodontist sliced into the roof of my mouth, secured a tissue graft, sewed the roof of my mouth back up, sliced into my lower gum line, peeled back the skin exposing the tooth below the gum line, placed the tissue graft off the freshly scraped tooth and sewed that in place. I am now in a chair recovering. Ouch. Enough said. Sounds like a good evening to watch a movie.
This is a picture of when Jim
came to cheer me up and
brought Hannah with him as a reinforcement. :)
Today she said please and thank you.

I'll share a few lines from a few of Seth's latest emails:

"I am feeling much more confident as a missionary...We really just need to find more new investigators...Tracting is pretty exciting. You never know who you are going to meet.
The church is true. Christ lives and is our Savior and Redeemer. It is only through Him that we can be saved. This church is His church, and we understand well what it means to follow Him and to have a covenant relationship with Him. Thank you all for your support and love."

Chinese Visitors

Jim asked me to find him a decent picture he could submit with his Mormon Tabernacle Choir audition tape which is due tomorrow. I found a few others while looking for that one including this one. I quite like it. I cropped it from a larger one. Nice.

Sunday evening Ian and Jessa invited me to go to Temple Square with them to walk around. Jessa's two sisters and her brother were also with us. It was after 9:00 so the visitor centers were closed. I noticed a large group of Chinese tourists sitting near the water fountain taking pictures of the Salt Lake Temple. I continued to watch them for a while and just couldn't help myself so I went up to them and welcomed them to Salt Lake in my less than perfect Chinese. They seemed shocked that I spoke to them in Chinese. There were at least a dozen people from China at that spot who were part of a bigger group on a tour of the United States. They had just come from a tour of Yellowstone and were only in Salt Lake for the evening. They were scheduled to fly out to Washington D.C. the next morning. We had a lovely chat in Chinese with a little English thrown in. :) They took a lot of pictures of Jim and me. They were thrilled to meet Ian and Jessa and took pictures of them as well. I told them they were just married in the temple in May. They liked that. Then they took pictures of Jessa's siblings. By the time we left, everyone was smiling and we felt like like good friends. What a nice experience.

Reality Check

We've been enjoying Nathan and Hannah living with us this summer. Gregory took the bar exam a few weeks ago and soon he and Sarah and the grandkids will be transitioning to their own apartment. This morning Sarah took this picture of Nathan. When Sarah asked Nathan what he was doing he said,
"studying for the bar."
Hilarious because he was so serious.
He still likes eating from his high chair
even though he's way too big for it.
And he can't quite keep all the food where it belongs.

And for Grandma Connie...
Hannah's reality check. :)

A Farewell And A Homecoming

Today in church a brother and sister from one family had a farewell and a homecoming. Their family is good friends with our family. Kristina is one of Seth's very good friends She flies out Tuesday to begin her mission in the Chile Santiago East mission. Her brother John just returned two weeks ago from his mission in the Dominican Republic. He reported on his missionary labors.

It was a tender experience to sit in Sacrament Meeting and watch the two of them together. Their family has made and will continue to make sacrifices to support missionary work. My heart went out to their Mom and Dad because their entire family has only been all together for two weeks before another missionary leaves for another year and a half. It was just a nice experience.

"Behold, I will send for many fishers,
 saith the Lord,
 and they shall fish them;
and after will I send for many hunters,
and they shall hunt them from every mountain,
 and from every hill,
and out of the holes of the rocks."
Jeremiah 16:16

Lots of missionaries these days
fulfilling this ancient prophecy. :)
